TIME: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM CDT
LECTURE agd cODE: 149
Handout
The “Child Sugar Sweetened Beverage Consumption Crisis in Texas” was developed by the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living at the UTHealth School of Public Health in Austin. Data from the Texas School Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) surveillance system was combined with current recommendations to showcase the threat that sugary drinks have on Texas children.

Session Description
This important and timely panel discussion will be facilitated by the Texas Public Health Dental Director.  Panelists include a registered school nurse, a registered dietitian, and a medical expert on sugar and obesity. Panelists will discuss the prevalence of sugar consumption and its harmful effects, including tooth decay. Topics will include how to counsel patients on sugar consumption as well as how and when to refer to a dietitian. The panel will also discuss policies and programs at the state and national levels aimed at curbing sugar consumption. The audience will walk away with an understanding of what is being done about sugar consumption at the broader policy level, and what they can do in their own professional settings.

Learning Objectives
  1. Discuss the impact of sugar and its prevalence.
  2. Describe how to identify patients who need dietary counseling and when they should be referred to a professional.
  3. Describe what policy-makers and organizations are doing to curb sugar consumption and what you as an individual can do in your own work.

Curriculum Vitae
“Syphilis the great masquerader…what to look for and why”
presented by Paras Patel, DDS
DATE: JULY 17, 2020
TIME: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM CDT
LECTURE AGD CODE: 010
Handout

Session Description
The state of Texas leads the country in the number of diagnosed cases of congenital syphilis per the recent data that was published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This comes after a steady increase in the number of cases of primary and secondary syphilis that the state and the country has seen in the past decade. As healthcare providers, we have a tendency to see ourselves as individuals, often times overlooking the fact that we are part of a greater team that can effectively change the incidence and prevalence of infectious diseases. Being aware of the clinical manifestations of syphilis, particularly those seen in the primary and secondary stages, can no doubt lead to early treatment for affected individuals and their partners, which can potentially cause a shift in the number of cases of congenital syphilis over time. In addition, the manifestations of congenital syphilis, when detected, can allow for appropriate referral and patient management. This course will harp on the importance of early detection as well as identify “at-risk” populations and discuss the basic statistics of syphilitic infections.

Learning Objectives
  1. Attendees will obtain knowledge about the statistics of syphilitic infections in the United States, with a focus on the current data for the lone star state.
  2. Attendees will gain a critical understanding of what it means to diagnose syphilis and why it is important to the individual and the population at large.
  3. Attendees will be able to better clinically evaluate patients for oral manifestations of syphilis.=

TIME: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM CDT
LECTURE AGD CODE: 770
Session Description
Access to information via the internet has dramatically changed the dynamics of health information and has amplified the spread of misinformation. Communication techniques have changed over the last decade, especially with the popularity of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, etc. We, as public health professionals, must adapt our methods to keep up with the changing times. This course will provide specific examples to show the process of building data-driven, evidence-based health communication campaigns. Presenters will share the techniques used to identify the sources of fluoride hesitant beliefs and methods used to understand and evaluate the root causes of those beliefs.

Learning Objectives
  1. Recognize the importance of user-centered message design in health communication
  2. Discover approaches for designing more effective health messages
  3. Review survey methods used to support a data-driven approach to designing health messages
  4. Discuss practical applications for communication messages and other resources developed by the campaign

I currently practice in a large federally qualified health center as a clinical pharmacist.  I see patients one-on-one or in a “covisit” model to manage patients primary care disease states, such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and anticoagulation.  During the covisit model, I serve as part of the multidisciplinary team, seeing the patient alongside primary care providers, specialists (cardiologists, endocrinologists), dietitians, behavioral health workers, and/or case managers to provide a patient-centered medical home.

I take pleasure in introducing myself as a dentist with over 20+ years of experience in clinical and academic dentistry, in the areas of Pediatric Dentistry and Public Health Dentistry. I have a combination of training and experience from India and the United States. I have been a faculty at two Dental Schools affiliated with prestigious universities in India for 14 years and a faculty at the Texas A&M University, Baylor college of Dentistry from 2011 to 2014. Besides teaching DDS and dental hygiene students' concepts of dental public health, oral epidemiology and evidence-based dentistry I was also involved in providing dental care to inmates housed at the Dallas County Jail.
During my time in academia in U.S., I published four research papers in different dental journals; one of the publications received the golden pen award. I'm also a peer reviewer on the Journal of dental hygiene.
Currently I'm the Chief Dental Officer at a FQHC in south central part of Texas since the last 6 years. Under my leadership, the oral health program at our center made successful strides. Our Oral health program received the 'John Rossetti Center for Excellence' award at the National Network for Oral Health Access Conference (NNOHA), Las Vegas in 2019.
I started an initiative at our center where I got our Chief Medical Officer onboard and trained our primary care providers and staff on the 'Smiles for life' curriculum which has increased awareness in oral health within the center. I also reached out to the behavioral health department to discuss the importance of oral health in patient with behavioral health needs. To continue with the same initiative in the community, I got our outreach team to visit with local ER's and was successful in establishing ER diversion program at a one of our sites.
I would like to be more involved and engaged with the TXOHC to help impact the oral and overall health of Texans.
